143 Crescent
Peter Turkosz

Peter was born on December 11,1925…one of six children born to Andrew and Katherine Luty. Sisters Eva, Mary, brother John (WW2) and Peter were all born in Alberta prior to the family moving to Ontario. Brother George (WW2) and sister Martha were born following the move.
The 1931 Census shows the family renting a home on Mill St. before settling at 143 Crescent, Acton. Homes in “the Crescent” were originally built and owned by Beardmore as company housing, before being sold off to private owners sometime in the 1930’s.
Peter enlisted in the Army (Regular), on April 14, 1942 at age 17, and served with the 1st Battalion New Westminster in Italy, Holland and England. He was released on February 22, 1944. He was haunted by the loss of so many young men. He never talked of war, but felt survivor’s guilt.
Once home from the war, Peter was one of best carpenters Acton ever had. Peter married Shirley Palmer and the couple lived at 6 Victoria Ave. and at 250 Mill St. East. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197 for 68 years.
Peter passed away May 5, 2010 and is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Acton.
