Wilfred "Bill" Earnest Hutton Mattocks

Born in Greenwich, England on February 2nd, 1915, (although his gravestone says 1912) Bill came to Canada on his own in 1929 at the age of 14 and worked local farms in the Acton area. The ship’s manifest indicates that his passage was paid for by the Y.M.C.A. and his destination was the United Church of Canada Hostel located in Norval, Ont.

Bill met his wife Vera Mary Rawlings in Acton, married her in 1940 and the couple had two sons…Edward Keith and Michael George. The couple settled at 48 Young St., Acton.

Bill served overseas in WW2…a Lance Corporal with the Cape Highlanders. He was wounded in Italy in 1944, and he spent over a year in Sunnybrook Hospital due to the extent of his wounds.

Bill died on November 11, 1990 while bringing the annual Remembrance Day parade to attention and he is buried at St. Luke’s Anglican Cemetery in Burlington.

Truly a Canadian Hero. His story lives on.
