Frank James Howells

Frank Howells was born in 1887 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He emigrated to Paris and worked as a spinner at Penmans Limited. He and his wife Edith lived at 43 Catherine Street and attended St James Anglican Church.

Frank was married when he enlisted on October 18, 1915, at 28 years of age, to serve in the 125th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 125th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) was an infantry unit mobilized in Brantford during the First World War. It was active from late 1915 until its absorption into a reserve battalion in England in April 1918.

The battalion began recruiting in late 1915 throughout Brant County and was based in Brantford. It was the 1st Overseas Battalion of the 38th Regiment Dufferin Rifles. It had an initial strength of 32 officers and 974 other ranks. The unit trained in Brantford until July 1916, when it moved to Camp Borden. The 125th Battalion embarked from Halifax on the troop ship Scandinavian on August 6, 1916, and arrived in the United Kingdom on August 18, 1916. Like many other CEF battalions, it did not serve in the field as a single fighting unit. Upon arrival in England, the Canadian military system often broke up units to provide reinforcements for battalions already fighting on the Western Front. The 125th Battalion was absorbed into the 8th Reserve Battalion on April 16, 1918.

Frank died in 1955 is buried in the Canadian War Veterans section of the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
