3 Young St.

John William Moore

3 Young St. Acton was the home of John Moore, son of Thomas T. Moore, Principal of Acton Schools. It was from this home in the year 1900 that John, the second son, familiarly known as Gunner Moore, went when he left as Acton’s representative in the far away South African War. It was to this home that the sad news came, that after six months of strenuous campaigning over Boer velts and rivers, over mountain passages and African Valleys, that the beloved soldier, son and brother had died of enteric fever and was buried in the military cemetery in Pretoria, the capital of the state. To Acton’s credit, a hero’s monument of heroic proportions was erected to his memory and occupied a commanding position near the entrance of Fairview Cemetery.

A true Canadian Hero. His story lives on.
