William Arthur Ansdell

On July 21, 1881, Charles Ansdell, farmer, registered the birth of his second child…William Arthur Ansdell, born to he and his wife Elizabth Esson on June 9, 1881, in Georgetown. Little did they know that on April 9, 1917 their precious son would be killed in action helping the Canadians take Vimy Ridge.

William had enlisted in Hamilton on September 2, 1915 and had gone to the front in July 1917 with a draft from the 92nd Highlanders, with whom he had enlisted.

At the time of his death, Pte William Ansdell had been transferred to 42nd Battalion as a reinforcement, he was 36 years of age, he had been married to Margaret Davis for just over a year, his religion was Presbyterian and had been a clerk in a grocery store prior to joining the colours.

A life ended.

As William’s final resting place is unknown, his name is memorialized on the Vimy Monument at Vimy France.

Truly a Canadian Hero. His story lives on.
